Introducing Maddy, Disney's first black princess. Yes, you read it correctly. Disney's first BLACK princess.
Word?
Our girls will probably never understand the true significance of this, but will be all the better for living in an era where a chocolate Disney princess is considered commonplace. Not that I'm actually looking for another reason to be dragged into the Disney store, but still. Thanks for the heads up, gingerbreadlatte! It's about time.

Well, it's about time!
Wow! And to think -- it is only 2007. Way to go Disney!
Seriously this is great. I am just dismayed that it took them so long to created a Black princess.
Oh well, better late than never!
I'm hoping my sister-in-law will take my bi-racial nieces to see this. They are bombarded with blonde princesses and mermaids.
But hey--Jasmine in "Alladin" was Arab right? Mulan was was Chinese. At least they got theirs but had to wait a long time...
I hope and pray its a wonderful movie! Every last one of my niece's and goddaughters will know what to expect from me in the princess gift realm from now on :)
Yeah, it's about time, but, Maddy?! Why the association with 'angry Black woman'? You can tell she wasn't named by a Black person--just like "Betty Applewhite" on that show I refuse to watch, Desperate Housewives.
I wonder why they call her the "frog" princess? And I was also wondering about the name "maddy" too. Yes I am an eternal skeptic, secretly.
It is certainly about time.
I'm pretty psyched about this. I wonder what kind of hair they're going to give her though.
Is it just me, or does just about every black person have an "Aunt Mattie"? Maybe it's a great aunt, but I've heaed it before. I thought the name fit the period of the movie.
Watch there be a whole bunch of little (black) Maddys running around after the film comes out (we already have a bunch of Madisons!) LOL
I feel a baby names post coming on...
Mrs J - you had an "Aunt Mattie", wife of uncle Edward, Uncle of your great grandmother. It was buried in your consciousness somehwere. / SMB
I'm alittle late to the "Hallelujah!" Party, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. I have a 5 year old daughter who is knee deep in the whole princess thing: Disney dolls, princess dress-up kit, 2 Disney princess tents, a Disney princess stove & refrigerator set, her own Disney plate and eating utensils, tiaras all over her room, her bedroom was painted with a mural of Cinderella's castle on a beach a few months after she was born, and to top it off, we're going to Disneyworld this summer for her sixth birthday.
WHEW! I cannot wait to finally see a BLACK Disney princess added to Snow White, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, and Ariel! I don't think the movie comes out for 2 years, but I think my wife and I will be the first ones in line at the Toys R Us to purchase all of the Maddy stuff we can find. This is LONG overdue!
